The origin of green tea can be traced way back to 2737 B.C. in China, to Emperor Shennong, a legendary sage and highly respected persona in traditional Chinese agriculture and medicine.

As per folklore, Shennong and his convoy stopped at a place to rest during their journey. A few tea leaves came flying from a nearby burning tea twig and dropped into his cup of hot water.
He discovered that the drink was refreshing and advised his crew to use that from then on. This gave birth to a new tradition of drinking green tea.

Tea bags were introduced sometime in the early twentieth century, and gradually received its acceptance in the form of a thin, porous bag used to steep tea. 

The very thought that inspired the innovation of tea bags had its root in the belief that for tea to taste its finest, the leaves ought to be removed from the hot water at the end of a specific brewing period (175 to 180⁰c). Additionally, the convenience factor also came into play. With this new avatar, tea could be prepared just as fast in a cup as it was in a pot, without the need for a tea strainer. But this newly invented method had its shortcomings too. Since the tea bags are made of nylon, a plastic material, dipping it in hot liquid had its own health risks. In addition, these bags are not biodegradable (unlike prednisone paper or cotton muslin) and hard to dispose without affecting the environment. The alternate material, corn-based plastic tea bags are usually produced from industrially-processed, genetically-modified corn, which endanger human health.

While commercial green tea bags do not get dissolved in hot water, they release millions of microscopic plastic particles.
